Zcash has activated its NU7 network upgrade, reducing the blockchain’s target block interval from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds. The major protocol update also introduces a new mechanism for managing transaction fees and changes how the network handles older shielded transactions.
The upgrade went live on November 6, 2026, at 02:34 UTC, when the Zcash mainnet reached block height 3,543,405.
Zcash NU7 Upgrade: What Changed?
The NU7 upgrade introduces several changes designed to improve network performance and support Zcash’s long-term sustainability.
Its most visible improvement is a threefold reduction in the target time between blocks. Instead of targeting a new block every 75 seconds, Zcash now targets one every 25 seconds.
Actual confirmation times can vary depending on mining conditions, network activity, and the number of confirmations required by individual wallets or exchanges.
Faster Blocks Could Improve Zcash Payments
Shorter block intervals could make Zcash more practical for everyday cryptocurrency transactions.
Under the previous target, a transaction’s first confirmation was expected after approximately 75 seconds on average. With NU7, that target falls to around 25 seconds once the network adjusts to the new parameters.
For businesses and payment services accepting ZEC, shorter confirmation intervals could reduce waiting times and improve the user experience.
However, the upgrade does not guarantee that every transaction will be finalized within 25 seconds. Individual services may require multiple confirmations before making funds available.
NU7 Introduces a Network Sustainability Mechanism
Another significant feature is the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), designed to support future mining incentives.
Under this mechanism, 60% of transaction fees are placed into a public reserve, while miners receive the remaining 40%.
The reserved fees are intended to return gradually to the network through future block rewards, beginning at a scheduled block expected around 2031.
This mechanism aims to address a long-term challenge faced by proof-of-work cryptocurrencies: maintaining incentives for network security as block subsidies decline.
Importantly, the reserved fees are not permanently burned.
Will NU7 Change Zcash’s Maximum Supply?
Despite the faster block production schedule, NU7 does not increase Zcash’s maximum supply of 21 million ZEC.
Block subsidies have been reduced proportionally to compensate for the shorter block intervals. The number of blocks between halvings has also been adjusted to preserve the existing issuance schedule.
As a result, the upgrade is designed to maintain approximately the same amount of newly issued ZEC per day.
Older Sprout Transactions Become Unspendable
NU7 also disables version 4 transactions, affecting Zcash’s original Sprout shielded pool.
Approximately 12,224 ZEC remained in Sprout when the upgrade activated. Under the new consensus rules, those funds can no longer be spent.
The affected coins have not been permanently destroyed by a burning mechanism. Restoring access would require a future protocol change, and no recovery upgrade had been approved at the time of activation.
This development highlights the importance of keeping cryptocurrency wallets updated and following official network upgrade announcements.
What Does the Upgrade Mean for ZEC?
The NU7 upgrade represents a significant technical milestone for Zcash, particularly as competition grows among blockchain networks offering private digital payments.
Faster target block intervals could improve payment usability, while the fee reserve introduces a new approach to supporting future mining incentives.
Nevertheless, technical improvements do not guarantee an increase in the market price of ZEC. Cryptocurrency valuations remain influenced by liquidity, adoption, investor sentiment, and broader market conditions.
Conclusion
With NU7 now active, Zcash has introduced faster target block production, a new transaction fee reserve, and changes to its legacy transaction infrastructure.
The next important test will be how these improvements perform in everyday network activity and whether they help strengthen the long-term usability of private cryptocurrency payments.
